When to call
Approximately ten weeks before your due date, we will discuss the delivery during one of your pregnancy checks, and we will inform you about when to call. We will of course consider your needs and wishes.
Some guidelines that should give you an idea about when to call:
1. If you have not yet reached your 37th week, always call IMMEDIATELY if:
- You have persistent abdominal pain, you are leaking fluids or blood, or if you are in any other way worried about the pregnancy or the baby.
2. From the 37th week of pregnancy onward, call us if:
- You are worried and feel the need to talk to your midwife; you can always call us, no matter what stage of labour you are in;
- You are experiencing very powerful contractions. Having contractions does not necessarily mean that you are in labour. The first stage of the birth of a first child often takes a long time. In this first stage, contractions are not yet very powerful, they last less than a minute and they are not very regular yet. In this stage of labour, the cervix will efface (become weaker, thinner, and shorter). In the next stage, you will have more powerful contractions that are closer together. The cervix will start to dilate. For the cervix to become fully dilated, you need to have strong, regular contractions that last for at least a minute every 4 to 5 minutes. If this is not your first birth, the delivery will be likely to go much faster, so it is important that you contact us in time.
One of the midwives will explain our when to call-guidelines to you.
- Your water breaks. It may be that the breaking of your water is the first sign of the onset of labour. Usually you will lose a lot of amniotic fluid in one gush, and afterward you will have a small trickle of fluids coming away. Amniotic fluid is usually white or pinkish. If your water breaks at night and the colour is normal, and you have been told by your midwife on you last check that the baby’s head is engaged, you can hold off calling us until the morning. After your water breaks, it might take hours for active labour to begin. Try to rest or sleep a little, and try not to wait for the contractions to come. If the amniotic fluid is yellow or green, please call us STRAIGH AWAY, even if you are not having contractions.
- The baby’s head is not engaged. If the baby’s head is not engaged, your midwife will have told you to call us IMMEDIATELY when your water breaks. We will come to check on you at your home.
- You are leaking blood. If you are losing a lot of bright red blood, contact us IMMEDIATELY.
