First Appointment

If you’ve had a positive home test, you can call us to make an initial appointment. You can also register via the registration form. Your first appointment will usually be scheduled between the 8th and 10th week of your pregnancy, but we can also schedule it a little earlier if you like.

Getting to know each other

The main purpose of the initial appointment is to get to know each other. We will ask you a lot of questions, and your answers to these questions will help us to create your personal care plan. The first check-up will take about 45 minutes. We find it important to discuss your plans, desires, hopes, and fears. Like doctors, midwives are subject to an obligation of professional secrecy, and therefore what you tell us will never leave the practice without your permission.

Determining the due date

To determine your due date, we will discuss your menstrual cycle. Using the first day of your last period as a starting point, we count the gestation period. The actual fertilisation will have taken place two weeks after this day. Including those two weeks before the fertilisation, the duration of a pregnancy is 40 weeks.

Dating scan

Your due date is determined by the first ultrasound, which is also known as dating scan. To have your dating scan, we will refer you to the ultrasound practice (in dutch) or to one of the hospitals in The Hague. The first scan is usually scheduled between the 10th and 12th week.

Medical History

We will ask you about your health and medical history. We will ask you whether you are using medication, and if so, which medication it is. The health of the baby’s father is also important. If you have been pregnant before, we will ask you how this pregnancy went. If you have any documentation about this previous pregnancy, we would like you to take that with you on your first appointment. If you were a patient in our practice before, this is not necessary.

Genetic Diseases

We will discuss whether there are any genetic diseases or congenital physical and/or mental disabilities in your family. If there are, it is possible for you to consult a geneticist.

Blood Tests

At the first check-up you will be given a lab-form which you need for a blood test. Your blood will be tested for:

  • Blood group / Rhesus factor;
  • Irregular antibodies;
  • Iron and glucose levels;
  • German measles (children’s disease);
  • Hepatitis B (liver disease);
  • Syphilis (sexually transmitted disease);
  • HIV (sexually transmitted disease).

For more information, we refer you to the website of the RIVM, the Dutch National Institute for Public Health and the Environment.

Blood Pressure and BMI

We will measure your blood pressure and determine you BMI (Body Mass Index) based on your weight and height.
